Module 1.1 - A Turning Point Event for Environmental Science, Cuyahoga River, OH
Point of View
The primary frame of reference for the film is the Cuyahoga River fire of 1969, which has historical and environmental significance. Due to its substantial impact on environmental changes and raising public awareness of pollution, this occurrence is considered a turning point in American environmental history.
- Probably using this historical event as a benchmark, the video takes into account:
-How much environmental harm had been done at the time?
-The modifications made to environmental legislation and public attitudes over
the previous fifty years.
-How the government and the community have addressed the pollution issue.
- The video most likely takes an activist and environmental-healing stance. It might come from:
-A documentary viewpoint, offering an objective analysis of how the fire impacted environmental debates both locally and nationally.
-A local perspective that highlights the work Cleveland, where the Cuyahoga River is located, has done to repair and revitalize the river and its surroundings.
-Locals, environmentalists, or historians may also share personal stories or insights in the movie, offering a relatable perspective on the drawn-out healing process.
-An environmental advocacy viewpoint that encourages further efforts to protect natural resources and emphasizes the river's progress.
Purpose
In this documentary, the long-term impacts of the Cuyahoga River fire—a pivotal moment in American environmental history—will be examined, along with the river's recovery over the past 50 years. Through this reflection, the movie highlights the attempts to clean up the river, the lessons learned, and the ongoing challenges of preserving the sustainability of our waterways. Its two primary goals are to increase understanding of the importance of protecting our natural resources and to promote continued environmental stewardship.
Questions at Issue
The presented issue in the video was that industries started polluting the river causing the river to be full of oil. The excessiveness of the hazardous materials and trash caused the river to no longer be able to maintain life but instead became a biohazard. The great amounts of oil started creating fires in the river, resulting in wanting to act on how to clean and recover the river.
Information
The video shows how working together and pushing forward can have a great result. Thanks to “Time Magazine” , capturing a picture of one of the fires and publishing made everyone want to act on fixing the problem. People gathered up to clean the river, this led to the development of education where they trained technicians on how to properly respond since there wasn't as much advanced technology as today. A big contribution to the environment of the river as the river was restored to an extent where marine life was able to come back to its environment and no more visible oil.
Interpretation and Inference
The Cuyahoga River now symbolizes advancement and achievement. Once recognized as a prominent example of an environmental catastrophe, it has evolved into a testament to resilience and restoration. Currently, the river is celebrated for its improved water quality, revitalized ecosystems, and the increasing popularity of activities such as fishing and kayaking. Many individuals cite Cuyahoga's remarkable transformation as proof that environmental degradation can be mitigated and that positive change is possible when local authorities and communities collaborate to protect the environment.
Concepts
The "Polluter Pays Principle" is a concept within environmental law and policy asserting that those who cause pollution are responsible for the associated costs. Accordingly, companies that have released oil and other pollutants into the Cuyahoga River should be held financially accountable for the required cleanup and restoration efforts.
“The Federal Water Pollution Act”, this act was passed after the events of the video but in a sense it points out how its important to maintain the water ecosystems clean out of chemicals and pollution.
Assumptions
In the video, they talk about how basically the river was taken for granted and became an issue because no one cared to make a change until it became per se viral on the “Time Magazine’”, having more people become aware of the issue helped push that change for the better of the environment.
Consequences
The end result was a restored river that welcomed life not just the marine life but life to the society. The river became a place where people could hang out and go kayak or socialize in boats. It also gives you the hope of going further to take down the gorge dam to allow life to extend and nature to restore further.
