Activity 3.2.1 – Natural Resources Review

Imagen
Natural resources are essential to our everyday lives, often in ways we may not immediately realize. Take a pencil, for example—it's made of wood, which comes from trees that grow on the Earth just like the video stated. Trees are just one of the many examples of the many living organisms that inhabit the planet, alongside animals. Beyond that, the Earth itself is rich in natural materials such as rocks, granite, and marble. These materials have been used throughout history in construction, art, and technology. Without these resources, our lives would not be as they are today. Over time, we have learned to harness the power of these natural resources, particularly for energy. By using wind, solar, and water power, we’ve been able to generate energy that sustains our daily routines. The importance of conserving these resources has become more apparent as we recognize their limited availability, pushing us toward more sustainable practices to ensure a better future. Activity 3.1 – Human Population

Imagen
France has a population of around sixty seven million and is one of the most populated countries in Europe. Because France has a birth rate that is declining, It has a relatively slow population growth. Something that does help to balance out the slow population growth is immigration. Despite having a population that is aging with an increasing proportion of senior residents, the nation continues to have one of the highest fertility rates in Europe. The majority of people live in metropolitan regions, especially in places like Toulouse, Lyon, Paris, and Marseille. With sizable immigrant populations, particularly from former colonies in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, France is a very diversified country with a rich cultural landscape. Although the core valve of the French is secularism, a majority of people are catholic due to the high impact that christianity had on the country. There is even a presence of the Muslim community which forms a significant minority throughout Fr...

Activity 2.3 – Biosphere and Interconnections

Imagen
My first concept map is about, The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that energy transformations occur spontaneously only if they increase the universe’s entropy, or disorder. On Earth, solar energy is absorbed, converted into thermal energy, and emitted as infrared radiation, raising the universe’s entropy, with some energy always lost as heat. While living organisms seem to defy this law by using solar energy to create complex molecules and lower local entropy, this is only possible because of a constant influx of solar energy—without it, life would break down, increasing entropy. The ecological energy budget shows how photosynthetic organisms transform solar energy into biomass, with primary producers fixing energy as Gross Primary Production and Net Primary Production. Only highly productive ecosystems can sustain top predators. Human diet choices impact energy efficiency, with vegetarian diets being more efficient than those involving animal products due to fewer trophic l...

Activity 2.2.1 – My daily water use

I recently moved into a utilities paid apartment so unfortunately I don’t have water bills to further do this activity.

Activity 2.2 - Cryosphere : Black Glacier, Alaska

Imagen
Problem : Black Glaciers are a magnificent river of ice seated in the heart of Alaska. These glaciers are such a beautiful sight to see, however, they are undergoing a lot of recession like many other glaciers worldwide. This phenomenon is known as glacial retreat and plays a keen role in helping us see the way that climate change affects the earth. The recession of this glacier is foremost due to increasing temperatures that climate change has been introducing which in turn accelerates the melting process. As the Earth warms, it makes the primary means of the glacier to lose mass through a process called ablation, the process by which snow and ice are lost from a glacier mainly from the snow and ice melting from the heat and sunlight, sublimation, calving, and wind erosion from the surface of the glacier. The results of all the receding glaciers worldwide include rising sea levels, which in turn increases coastal erosion, changes in ecosystems, and many other forms of change. Another ...
